Northumberland sea rescue after paddle boarder is left 'hanging onto the board' in water

Emergency services rushed to rescue a distressed paddle boarder left “hanging onto the board” in the North Sea.

Both Newbiggin Coastguard Rescue Team and Newbiggin Lifeboat were both called out to assist the casualty off the coast of Cresswell, Northumberland, after the alarm was raised on Saturday, September 12, by a concerned bystander.

A statement from the Newbiggin Coastguard Rescue Team later read: “A member of the public called 999 and asked for the Coastguard after seeing a paddle boarder in distress.

“Newbiggin Coastguard Rescue Team and Newbiggin Lifeboat proceeded to Cresswell.

The rescued boarder is brought back to shore.The rescued boarder is brought back to shore.

“As both rescue assets headed towards the area, further information was received that the person had made several attempts to reboard the board but was still in the water.

“Once on scene the Lifeboat arrived to find the person hanging onto the board.

“Under the skillful control of the helm the lifeboat was able to recover the casualty.

“The casualty was then taken ashore and met by Newbiggin Coastguard Rescue Team.

“The casualty had already received an assessment from the lifeboat crew.

“The casualty received some safety advice and thanked both Coastguard and lifeboat for providing assistance.

“The first informant was thanked for calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.”

The rescue team have issued a series of guidelines for paddle boarders to follow before setting out to sea.

They should always check weather conditions, have a means for calling for help, not head out on an offshore wind and to both tell someone of their plans and when they plan to return.
