Carlo’s of Alnwick has maintained its place among the UK’s top fish and chip shops by again landing a prestigious award.

It is still the only fish and chip shop in Northumberland to hold the NFFF Fish and Chip Quality Award alongside a five-star food hygiene rating and the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2017.

The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry.

It rewards and promotes shops that provide good-quality products and high standards of hygiene.

To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF approved assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and, most importantly, the quality of the cooked product.

Carlo’s co-owner, Adam Alexander, said: “We are extremely proud to achieve the NFFF Fish and Chip Quality Award. We first received this award back in 2011 when we were the first shop in Northumberland to achieve this accolade.

“To be recognised as one of the top fish and chip shops by the NFFF is indeed an honour and a credit to our hard-working staff to whom I would like to offer my sincere thanks for their continued hard work and efforts to maintain our excellent reputation.

“The award doesn’t just represent the fish and chips we produce, but also the hard work and high-quality produce our local suppliers provide us to work with.

“In addition to this award, we have also earned a five-star hygiene award by Northumberland County Council for demonstrating high levels of health and hygiene throughout the business.”
