A Northumberland man, who was hit by a falling sign in Berwick during Storm Desmond at the weekend, has died in hospital.

It follows the incident on Saturday morning at Berwick railway station, which occurred during the high winds and adverse weather brought by the storm.

Today, a police spokeswoman told the Gazette: “At 9.45am on Saturday, a 70-year-old man was seriously injured after being struck by a falling sign that had been dislodged by the bad weather on Railway Street, Berwick.

“He was taken to hospital by air ambulance while police worked with the local authority to cordon off the area and make sure no other members of the public were at risk.

“The man, who was from Berwick, has been in hospital since the incident, but was sadly pronounced dead by doctors on Wednesday evening (yesterday).

“There’s not believed to be any third-party involvement and the death has now been passed to the coroner.”
