Alnwick, Craster and Wooler all feature in part one of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, which is published this weekend. The list also features Corbridge in the west of the county.

The annual supplements combine data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with the local knowledge and expertise of Sunday Times writers to compile the definitive top locations to make your home.

The locations were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

This Sunday’s first guide of a two-part series features the best places to live in the North East, Midlands, Northern Ireland and Wales. Part two, published on Sunday, March 19, will reveal the best places in the South West, East, London, Scotland and the North West, as well as the overall best place to live in the UK.

Home editor, Helen Davies, said: “Britain is full of great places to live and our annual supplement celebrates the richness on offer from bustling market towns and buzzing city centres to sociable suburbs and sleepy hamlets. We go beyond dry statistics, drawing on personal experience and the expertise of our writers, to create the definitive list of the best places to live in the UK.”

Readers will be able to join in the conversation online by sharing their favourite places and why they love them using the hashtag #bestplacestolive
