Northumberland coastline search launched by emergency services to help find missing teenager

Searches were made from the sea and land to track down a teenage boy who had been reported missing to police.

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Howick, Seahouses and the HM Coastguard from Holy Island were joined by volunteers from Seahouses Lifeboat Station after the alarm was raised just after 5.30pm today, Sunday, June 14.

It was reported the teenage boy could be in area between Bamburgh and Seahouses, with the teams working in difficult conditions due to the foggy weather.

The Coastguard also called in one of its senior coastal operations officers to join in the search, with Northumbria Police's helicopter also alerted as inquiries got underway.

Police officers on the scene soon tracked down the missing boy, with the rescue operation then stood down.

A spokesperson for Howick Coastguard Rescue Team said: “The teams were tasked to carry out a search of the dunes and beach area around Bamburgh Castle whilst the inshore lifeboat from Seahouses Lifeboat Station was tasked to carry out a shoreline search from the seaward side.

“Northumbria Police Air Support Unit was also en-route to carry out an aerial search.

“Shortly after the search commenced the missing male was located by officers from Northumbria Police and found to be uninjured.

“All teams were then stood down.

”A good end result to the tasking on what was becoming quite a foggy and damp evening.

“Remember, in an emergency at sea or on the coast, or if you think someone may be in difficulty, always call the Coastguard by dialling 999.

A spokesperson for the RNLI team added: “Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat was requested to launch by UK Coastguard to assist the Police and Local Coastguard Units from Seahouses, Holy Island and Howick, to search for a missing male teenager.

“The lifeboat was tasked to conduct a shoreline search from Seahouses to Bamburgh, while police and Coastguards searched shore and dunes.

“Within a short time of commencing the search, all units were stood down as the missing person had been located safe and well by the police, and Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat was released and returned to station.

”Visibility at the time was poor due to sea fog.”
