STAINED GLASS: It was a chilly, blustery, evening when 24 members arrived for the October meeting of North Sunderland WI in the Social Club.
Mrs Walton, presiding, opened the meeting and the minutes were read by Mrs Sandra MacFarlane, these were approved and signed.
Matters arising: Bamburgh WI holding their annual Christmas lunch, December l, at Cragside (inviting us to join); workshop, make a fascinator, November 17, Cresswell House; Christmas celebration, December 15, Hexham Abbey; Bouldering wall activity, December 8, Willowburn; Calendars for 2013, photographs, prints , transparencies required by February 21, 2012 please.
We were reminded that, at County Day, there will be a variety of activities and entertainment, as well as refreshments. Plans are being made for our Christmas party in December.
Our speaker for the evening was Helen Grierson who has the A1 Glass Studio at Felton.
Helen is very experienced in stained glass work. She has studied art for many years and gave us a very wide selection of her beautiful work, cold and heated glass.
We were shown the basics of stained glass making and how the glass is inserted into the lead. Some of the glass comes from Germany, USA and China.
The slides and pictures she showed us, together with the samples, were lovely - depicting animals, flowers and scenery and then we all gathered around to have a closer look.
Helen teaches, in small groups, and also makes hanging Christmas decorations.
The vote of thanks was given by Judith Stephenson then we all enjoyed a pooled supper.
The competition, a piece of glass, was won by: Mrs Betty Walton, Mrs Sandra MacFarlane and Mrs Carol Phillips and the raffle was won by Mrs Jean Dawson.
We hope to visit the Percy Arms at Chatton for our next pub lunch.
Our next meeting will be held on November 3, when we hope to have a chocolate lecture. All invited.
