North Sunderland and Seahouses WI, May meeting

Pat Minto presided at the May meeting of North Sunderland and Seahouses WI, welcoming members and visitors as the meeting was open to the public and included a talk with information regarding our new Accident and Emergency Hospital at Cramlington. It was a good turnout with over 70 people present.

The initial item on the agenda was to introduce Colin Doig, consultant cardiologist, and Anna Gay.

First and foremost, the new hospital will be an emergency hospital, open24 hours and based at Cramlington.

Suspected stroke, loss of consciousness, severe chest pains, sudden shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain and severe blood loss will be among the emergencies dealt with.

A consultant will be on duty 24/7 in the first instance and, after stabilising, the patient will then be transferred to a base hospital, ie Wansbeck, Hexham, Berwick or Alnwick.

The opening date is to be June 15. The changeover will be over three days. A&E will open on the Tuesday morning.

Ambulances will then have only one place to deposit patients. In very severe cases the patient will be sent direct to the Freeman. A stand-by ambulance will be based at Cramlington, which was chosen in order that transport could reach the hospital.

Several questions were raised. These were all adequately answered in the affirmative: Car parking; x-ray unit; MRI; CAT scans; maternity; intensive care; public transport; restaurant and security.

The vote of thanks was given by Val Hart.

A very enjoyable, tasty supper was served to which all guests were invited , following which our May meeting commenced with the minutes of the previous meeting being read and accepted, the matters arising and correspondence being discussed.

The treasurer’s report and the report from the Spring Council meeting were also read, together with the programme for the year .

Future events include croquet at Bamburgh in June, archery at Backworth, a visit to Bowes Museum, Federation Day in June at Hexham and a car treasure hunt at Longhoughton.

Our last pub lunch was at the White Swan at Warenford. Our next one will be at the Tankerville, Eglingham, on Saturday, May 30, at 12.30pm.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 2, at 7.30pm when we will have Katrina Porteous as our guest speaker. New members are always welcome. Do come and join us.
