A new event is being planned to try to boost activity in a north Northumberland town, and it is hoped that residents will turn out to support it.

Alnwick Chamber of Trade (ACT) is organising a Summer Fair, to be staged in the Market Place on Monday, May 27.

The showcase, which will start at 10am, will feature cakes, floral arrangements, fruit and vegetables.

People are being encouraged to submit entries, with a host of prizes up for grabs.

There will also be live music.

Maureen Hornsby, owner of Melvyn’s Cafe and secretary of ACT, said: “The chamber of trade is organising this to encourage some activity in the town other than just in August and September.

“We are in the process of organising some music and entertainment and the show will involve cake and floral competitions, so something for locals to get involved in. It will be just for the one day and after the event, we will consider the feasibility of producing it annually.

“The chamber of trade feels that since the Alnwick Fair has ceased, that there is a need for more activities to be introduced in to the town, so we are hoping that this may be just the start.”

Each entry is £1 and forms must be received by May 20.

Entry forms are available from most of the businesses in Alnwick. Alternatively, download a form by visiting
