New Screwfix store holds official opening celebration

The new Screwfix store in Alnwick has been officially opened and the company has described the launch as a major success.

The branch, which is based on Lionheart Enterprise Park and has created 15 jobs, held the unveiling event last Thursday and extended the celebrations across the weekend.

Following the official opening, the store is encouraging local charities and community projects to apply for funding through The Screwfix Foundation.

Store manager Chris Finlay said: “We chose to open a new store in Alnwick because it’s a growing town with a great trade presence.

“Many of our customers already shopped with us at our Ashington and Newcastle – Kingston Park stores and are delighted to see us here, as they no longer have to travel so far.

“Our celebration period, which ran from last Thursday throughout the weekend until Sunday, attracted hundreds of customers and we are looking forward to welcoming many more local people over the coming months. We have received fantastic support from the local community, who have all shown a keen interest in the store.

“It has been extremely exciting that we have already attracted repeat business and we are all enjoying getting to know new customers.”

The new Alnwick shop, which began operating in January prior to last week’s official opening, has launched as part of the company’s nationwide expansion plan, which saw the retailer open 60 new UK stores in 2015 with a further 60 to be added in 2016.

Screwfix is also looking to become actively involved with local charities through its own registered charity arm The Screwfix Foundation, which supports local charities and community projects with donations for projects involving fixing, repairing or maintaining buildings. Screwfix staff get directly involved in helping community projects and host charity fund-raising events within the stores.

Local registered charities are welcome to apply for funding from The Screwfix Foundation and can pop into the Alnwick Screwfix branch to pick up a Screwfix Foundation leaflet for more information.

The Alnwick store is open Mondays to Fridays, 7am to 8pm, Saturdays, 8am to 6pm, and Sundays, 10am to 4pm.
