New housing strategy online

A new five-year housing strategy document has been published by Northumberland County Council.

It outlines the council’s plans for meeting people’s housing need by delivering new affordable homes and maintaining and improving existing housing stock.

Housing is a key priority for the council as it recognises that not having a home, or living in poor quality housing, can have a detrimental effect on people’s health, family life and inclusion in society, as well as their educational and employment prospects.

The strategy aims to that ensure people in Northumberland have access to a home that is safe, warm and affordable, and that help and support is available to those that are unable to meet their own housing need.

Coun Alan Hepple, policy board member for housing, planning and regeneration at Northumberland County Council, said: “A warm, safe and affordable home is a fundamental part of all our lives. Our home provides us with security and somewhere to call ‘our own’, which can be a big part of our identity.

“We are determined to address the acute shortage of affordable housing by providing new homes and helping people who have been waiting on the housing list. With the implementation of the council’s new housing strategy, it is hoped that more people in Northumberland can live in properties they are proud to call home.”
