New club record for Jo at Tyne 5-mile race

A group of seven Alnwick Harriers took part in the latest of the 2016 Grand Prix events, the fast and furious Bridges of the Tyne 5 Mile Road Race.

On a really flat course there were some excellent times, notably a club record for Jo Gascoigne-Owens at the 5 mile distance!

Doubling as the North East 5-Mile Championships, this race saw Jo win the bronze medal for coming third in 30.16, a time which saw her finish 34th overall.

The event starts at The Barracks, Berwick and is a 1.2 mile run around the town walls with the aim being to beat the time it takes the Curfew Bell to toll – 13 minutes.

Congratulations to Junior Harrier Callie Henderson, who was first female finisher in 8.02 to finish 17th overall.

Jim Lillico finished two places ahead in 7.59, whilst his daughter Annabel was 37th in 9.20.

There was even more success for the Henderson family as Callies younger sister, Ellie, was the first girl in the Junior Curfew Fun Run!

* Following on from a club record by Jo Gascoigne-Owens and the fastest 10k of the year for the club by Dan Leng in midweek, Saturday, July 9 saw the quickest 5k of the year!

Steve Carragher took part in the Druridge Bay Parkrun and blasted round in a brilliant 16.58 to win the race by a decent margin. Steve’s time was the fastest 5k by a Harrier since 2013.

Dominic Harris continued his amazing improvement by notching a course best of 18.55 to finish fifth. Ian Horsley was the third Harrier across the line, whilst Ian Atherton was winner of the male 60 category.

There was more success as Carole Page was first female finisher for an amazing third week on the spin! Her time of 21.48 was a minute better than second female Angie Embleton. Also well done to Denise Drummond who won the female 50 age group.
