Made up of experienced campaigners and new Lib Dem members, it will offer residents the chance to have a say on their neighbourhoods and make sure the party campaigns on things which matter the most in local areas.

It has organised a residents’ survey which, starting in Longhoughton ward, will ask about topics like transport, healthcare and village facilities.

The questionnaire will help the Liberal Democrats build a picture of life in the constituency.

Welcoming the creation of the committee, Heather, who is experienced in local-government issues, said: “As a former county councillor, many residents still contact me about problems which are simply not being solved.

“Constituents sometimes feel their voices are not being heard in County Hall, at Morpeth and at Westminster.

“That’s why I am delighted to say that we will be offering people the chance to tell us what’s affecting their day-to-day lives.

“Community activism has always been at the heart of Lib Dem campaigning. Our new surveys and campaign committee makes sure we’ll be working hard to support local areas all year round.”
