National Science Week comes to St Michael's

St Michael’s CofE First School in Alnwick gave over five afternoons to science, which enabled the children to work in mixed-age groupings in a range of exciting activities.

Miss Phillips, the science coordinator, worked closely with Mrs Bowden, head of chemistry at the Duchess’s Community High School, and the partnership included some very enthusiastic Sixth Form students going to St Michael’s to lead activities .

Each of the pupils was given a lab coat for the week and they were encouraged to make notes and draw diagrams about what they learned.

The learning activities have included chromatography, acids and alkalis, planets, nutrition, healthy living and hydraulics.

The children in Key Stage 2 were also treated to an afternoon using the labs at the high school, including testing metals, making sparklers and using microscopes.

Headteacher Gavin Johnston described the week as ‘a very worthwhile experience for all’, adding: “The children have kept a passport of their learning over the week and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Many of the children are already talking about jobs in science they might like to peruse or interests to follow.”
