A national retailer, described as a top company specialising in tiles, is set to move into a vacant unit in Alnwick.

The company, which has not yet been formally named, is taking on the empty premises on South Road, close to the Aldi store, outside the town centre.

Majestic Wine was previously due to open up in the shop, but pulled out in the summer of 2015.

The site is owned by Northumberland Estates and director Colin Barnes confirmed that the shop is all set to be occupied.

He said: “We are pleased that the unit is now being let out to a national retailer.

“While they will make their own announcement in due course, they are a top company and specialise in tiles.

“We are always delighted to see new investment and jobs coming to the town.”

Speculation has been rife on social media about who is moving into the site and one of the suggestions is Topps Tiles, which is the UK’s biggest tile specialist.

Mr Barnes said he was unable to comment on this. The Gazette contacted Topps Tiles for a comment on Tuesday to see if the company could confirm or deny the rumours, but we did not receive a comment before going to press yesterday.

The South Road site was previously home to Willis of Alnwick, which closed in 2009. The plot then stood empty for a number of years.

In 2014, a Northumberland Estates’ application to bring the site back into use – with Aldi and Majestic Wine stores – was approved. Majestic fell through, but Aldi opened in September last year.
