A MYSTERY object has been unearthed at a house in Alnmouth, which has baffled villagers over where it came from and what its purpose was.
Builders converting Mary Cleghorn’s house at Argyll Street found what appears to be an iron cross lodged behind a fireplace in a top-floor bedroom.
The fitting, which is around 21 inches long, has a piece missing at one end, while the top is believed to have originally been encircled by a matching semi-circle.
Villager Terry Collinson, who edits the local newsletter, took a picture of the object. He said: “It is unclear what it is, or why it was placed there.
“Did it have religious origins or was it merely a decorative item?”
