Museum open during restoration works

The Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery in Alnwick has received a £17,088 funding award from SITA Trust for the Stonework and Stained Glass Window Live Restoration Project.

The project will carry out essential restoration work on the Grade II listed building that houses the Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery.

The work is split into two parts. First, work to restore and, if necessary, replace worn stonework on the exterior of the building. Second, work to remove, restore and refit a worn leaded light panel window.

The work started last month and although the front of the building will be scaffolded, the museum will be open as usual.

To coincide with the work, the volunteers at the Bailiffgate will be arranging a stained glass workshop on Friday, May 27, and and two children’s craft events on Tuesday, May 31, and Thursday, June 2.

Mal Graham, Chairman of the Trustees at the Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery, said “We were delighted to hear the news that we had received the funding award. The building is as much a part of the heritage of Alnwick as the collection and exhibitions that are on display inside it. It is very reassuring to know that we are now able to restore the stonework and the window, preserving the integrity and history of the building.”
