An appeal for volunteers is being made to help support a new-look north Northumberland attraction which reopens its doors next month.

The transformed Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery is set for an official unveiling in February following a major refit.

The Alnwick venue is keen for people to join its busy team of volunteers and be part of this exciting new chapter.

Duties range from helping visitors and working front-of-house to archiving the collections.

The museum also has a Friends scheme, giving members and a guest free admission and previews to events and exhibitions. It normally costs £15 for a year, but anyone joining on February 14, between 1pm and 4pm, will receive 14-months’ membership at a 10 per cent reduction.

Trustee Sheila Starks said: “The museum is run by volunteers and visitors always comment on how friendly and knowledgeable they are.

“We need people who can commit to a little regular time when they can work with visitors or behind the scenes with our collections.

“If you can be a volunteer or a Friend, you’ll be helping this brand new attraction for Alnwick to have a brilliant new launch. And I guarantee you’ll have fun.”

Volunteer Brenda Wright said she has enjoyed helping out at the museum, which has made her feel part of the community after moving back to the town after 31 years in South Africa.

She said: “I love my role which involves digitising old documents such as school books and court records. Every time I look at them I learn something interesting.”

Keen photographer Catherine Teasdale, from Warkworth, is also helping digitise the museum’s archives.

She said: “I had some time on my hands and wanted to get involved. I get so much out of it. It is fascinating work and such a nice atmosphere.”

Former teacher Hilary Waugh loves meeting young visitors from local schools.
