A PUBLIC meeting will be held to discuss the future of an RAF base on the north Northumberland coast.
MP Sir Alan Beith has said he is ‘disappointed’ by the RAF’s stance on the future of the former Air Weapons Range base at Goswick Sands, but has welcomed the news that the RAF will hold a meeting before any final decision is taken.
Sir Alan said: “Like many residents and businesses in the area, I am disappointed that the RAF seems set to change the arrangements for dealing with unexploded ordnance located at Goswick Sands.
“At present we have the reassurance of a team based at Goswick Sands which monitors the sands. The RAF seems determined to go ahead but have agreed with me that there is a need to have a public meeting and listen to local views.
“A change to the current system needs to be based on keeping the sands safe and if the RAF are determined to change the system then they need to explain to local residents and businesses how the new system will offer the same or better levels of safety than we have at present.”
