A DROP in unemployment figures in north Northumberland has been welcomed by Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith.
The number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in the Berwick upon Tweed constituency has fallen by 3.4 per cent over the year from January 2011 to January 2012.
The figures come alongside news that unemployment across the North East has fallen by 4,000.
Although the overall rate of unemployment in the region is still high, in the Berwick upon Tweed constituency the level of unemployment is 3.5 per cent compared to 4.1 per cent nationally and 5.6 per cent in the North East.
Sir Alan said: “This is encouraging news but we still have a lot to do to get businesses creating new jobs in the area.”
The figures from the House of Commons Library show that in the Berwick upon Tweed constituency the number of people claiming JSA in January 2012 was 1608, compared to 1664 in January 2011.
