MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, visited renowned local sawmill A&J Scott in Wooperton on Friday.

A & J Scott Ltd supply sawn timber for a wide variety of uses, principally in the outdoor and garden products, fencing, landscaping, DIY, and pallet and packaging sectors.

The company is family-owned and was established in 1960. It still operates from the original site in north Northumberland, employing over 100 people.

Continuing investment means it has state-of-the-art production facilities. This includes investment in 2016 in its main sawmill line and new handling equipment to cope with the increase production of co-product. Rising productivity means the company is looking to increase its overall output by over 15% in 2017.

Anne-Marie, who is a firm supporter of the forestry industry, said of the visit: “It was fantastic to tour the site and talk to Andrew Scott and his team.

“We are fortunate to have such a great local employer just outside Alnwick, and I was pleased to meet some of the apprentices the company has taken on, who will hopefully guarantee the future of this vital trade.”

The sawmill sources timber from sustainable forests within the UK, something Anne-Marie has been campaigning to increase as part of her wider work on forestry and tree-planting.
