Motorists advised of A697 road closure

Drivers are being advised of essential repair works on the A697 in Longframlington next week, which will require the road to be closed.

Starting on Monday, the road repairs are part of this year’s £23million Local Transport Plan being carried out by the county council.

Due to the narrow stretch of the A697 in the village, the council has no alternative but to close Front Street temporarily to carry out the works safely. A diversion of the A697 via Weldon Bridge – Rothbury – New Moor House will be in place for the first three days of the scheme from 7.30am to 7pm.

The works have been scheduled for this period to avoid winter weather on the diversion and at a time when school traffic is minimised due to the half-term holiday.

The remaining work scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, south of the Rothbury Road junction, will be carried out under two-way traffic lights, weather permitting. Residents and businesses have been made aware of the works and access arrangements.

Coun Glen Sanderson, cabinet member for environment and local services, said: “We appreciate there is a significant diversion and are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause drivers, however, the work will be done as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.”

He added: “Businesses in the village remain open and the village itself can still be accessed, but with no through traffic.

“I’d also like to thank local residents and drivers in advance of the works for their understanding while these essential repair works are carried out.

“We are spending millions this year improving our road network across the county, but inevitably there will be some disruption while the work is carried out.”
