Mother hopes that Race For Life will be a big success

Fund-raisers are being encouraged to sign up for a charity run which has been inspired by a mother’s cancer ordeal.

Sharon Reid is behind the 2014 Alnwick Race For Life event, which will take place at Shilbottle’s Welfare Hall on Sunday, June 22.

Next month’s challenge, in aid of Cancer Research UK, comes on the back of the inaugural run in 2013.

Sharon, of Alnwick, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. She had been aiming to take part in one of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events last year, but ongoing complications caused by the condition prevented her from doing so.

Wanting to get involved, she took it upon herself to organise the 2013 run in Alnwick to raise money for the cause. Held at Alnwick Town Football Club, it attracted around 450 people of all ages, with many decked out in pink.

Sharon wants this year’s event to go even better and surpass last year’s total of £15,000. Entry is now open and the run will start around noon. The fee is £5 adults, £2 children. Adults must get a minimum of £25 sponsorship, children £10.

As well as the run, there will be stalls, car-boot sale, bouncy castle, raffle and tombola. Any businesses who can provide raffle prizes should contact organisers.

To help raise extra money for the cause, a celebrity-hosted quiz is taking place at Shilbottle’s Welfare Hall tomorrow at 1pm.

The identity of the special guest has not yet been identified, but it is somebody from TV show, The Chase.

Entry is £12 adults and £7 for U16s. It includes buffet lunch and quiz entry. Tickets are available from the village’s Post Office or NRP Foods, in Alnwick.
