More funds announced to speed up broadband

Northumberland is to get another £650,000-worth of funding to help take superfast broadband to the most remote and rural areas.

The Government has announced the cash injection this week to help business start-ups and job creation.

It is part of a £7.1million pot for the North East which will ensure 95 per cent of UK homes and businesses have access to superfast broadband by 2017.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller said: “Superfast broadband will benefit everyone in the North East – whether they need it for work, to do homework or simply to download music or films.

“Thousands of homes and businesses now have access and it is helping people with their everyday tasks.”

The Government has also recently committed £10million for local authorities to look at ways to reach those areas in the ‘final five per cent’ which are the hardest to access.
