The package of measures, which includes introducing a 20mph speed limit through the centre of the village, has been put forward by ward councillor Kate Cairns, who would help pay for the project if it went ahead.

The proposals also include advisory cycle lanes, removing the central white line from the road and gateway signage.

Tomorrow is the last day for comments to be submitted to the county council, and at Monday night’s Longhoughton Parish Council meeting, Coun Cairns admitted comments have been mixed.

She said: “We have had some for and some against. We have had some against the 20mph – which I am surprised at – and slightly more against than for the cycle lanes.”

She has said that the proposals are based on research and evidence that shows they work in slowing traffic.

At Monday’s meeting, parish council chairman Coun Bryan Ellis said he was in favour of anything that reduces motorists’ speed and believes the proposals are a good idea.

RAF representative Simon Buist said that some people have said that the proposed 20mph zone is too big, and as a result, would not be adhered to. He said he supported the 20mph limit, was unsure about the advisory cycle lanes, but ‘we should give it a go because we won’t know until we try’.

Coun Adrian Hinchcliffe believes a strategy to promote cycling in the village would be needed for the cycle lanes to do any good.
