A statement from the club said Mullen, who had been in charge of the St James’ Park outft for almost a year, had decided to step down from the role because of ‘current personal circumstances.’

His replacement has been named as Richard Mitchell, (pictured) who has been appointed with immediate effect. He is the former assistant manager at West Allotment Celtic in the Northern League Division 1.

Alnwick Town say: “Richard Mitchell comes recommended by a number of experienced managers in the Northern League and is local, living near Felton.

“He may well appoint his own assistant following a period of getting to know the playing squad and club.”

Mitchell will take training this week and will be in full charge for his first game on Saturday (November 19) when the team plays at home against Bedlington Terriers.

On Saturday past Alnwick drew 2-2 away to Thornaby, a game in which they led twice, only to be denied victory by a rather fortuitous late equaliser.
