Elderly residents are getting a weekly floral treat, thanks to a blooming good idea from Miranda Hunwick.

The Year 1 pupil at St Paul’s RCVA Primary School, Alnwick, had asked her teacher Mrs Byrne what the town’s Sainsbury’s store did with the flowers that weren’t sold.

Mrs Byrne thought they would be thrown away.

As part of a literacy topic, the children were asked to write a letter.

Miranda decided she would write to Sainsbury’s asking for the flowers that weren’t sold to be donated to the school.

Anita McDonald, PR ambassador from Sainsbury’s, got in touch with St Paul’s and offered the flowers.

The children use the flowers to make up their own bouquets and then take them to Abbeyfields every week to give to the residents there.

The left-over flowers are used in school in the main shared areas like the hall, reception and focus rooms.
