A car wash, held in memory of Tom Naples, a firefighter who died last month while on a Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service training course, raised more than £500.

Tom, 59, completed 30 years’ service at Berwick, Alnwick, Morpeth and Cramlington. After his retirement, he joined the retained service in 2004 and continued to serve his community as a retained firefighter at Alnwick.

He began to feel unwell while attending the course on February 2, and collapsed. Despite the efforts of his course colleagues and members of North East Ambulance Service, he was unable to be revived.

The money raised at yesterday’s car wash will be shared between the firefighters charity and the British Heart Foundation.
