Coun Mavin, 72, had been a town councillor for Castle Ward in Alnwick since June 2013 when she was co-opted onto the authority.

In the last year, as well as the full council, she was also a member of the cemetery; finance and policy; and planning, highways and transport committees.

Mayor of Alnwick, Alan Symmonds, said: “Sheila epitomised what a town councillor should be. She was forthright in her opinions, often disagreeing with her husband and fellow councillor George Mavin, and was a passionate supporter of both the town council and the town.

“She will be greatly missed by her fellow councillors and all those who knew her.”

Sheila was always supportive of activities and events which promoted the town and its amenities. She had been part of the First World War working group which was responsible for the restoration of the war memorial in 2014.

As part of the cemetery committee, she was also involved in the expansion of the cemetery and instrumental in the development of a natural burial area and for ensuring that children continue to be buried free of charge.

The projects which Coun Mavin was part of and was proud of will serve as a lasting memorial to her and her involvement in the town.
