Massive rise in honour crimes

HONOUR crimes in the Northumbria Police force area have increased by 300 per cent, statistics have revealed.

According to figures from the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation 70 people in Northumbria were the targets of so-called honour assaults, harassment and violence in 2010 compared to 17 in 2009.

Nationally there were almost 3,000 honour-related crimes recorded in 2010.

The statistics come from information obtained via Freedom of Information requests made by the organisation and it is the first time that a picture of this form of violence has been compiled.
