A male driver was taken to hospital with head injuries after his car crashed and flipped onto its roof on the outskirts of a Northumberland town last night.

The incident happened on the B1340 road, close to the bridge over the River Aln between Alnwick and Denwick. Police were alerted to the crash at 8.35pm and officers, as well as paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service, attended the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said that the man was taken to the hospital in Cramlington before being transferred to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. She added that the incident involved one vehicle, a Volkswagen Lupo, which sustained damage.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who has information should call 101 ext 69191 quoting reference number 1099 04/11/15.
