Man pronounced dead at scene of Northumberland crash after being hit by two cars

Northumbria Police launched an investigation following the incident, in Seaton Delaval, which happened shortly before 6am on Monday, January 13.

Officers received reports of a collision on Foremans Row, near to the Keel Row pub, where a white Vauxhall Insignia had struck a man on the carriageway.

A red Mazda 2, which was travelling in the other direction, then also hit the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the emergency services.

Another pedestrian, who is believed to have been walking with the victim prior to his death, then left the scene in the Vauxhall Insignia.

This led to a police pursuit, which ended when the stolen vehicle hit a wall on First Avenue, Blyth.

A 26-year-old man, who fled the scene on foot, has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and remains in custody.

Inspector Ian Cutty, from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, has called on witnesses, or motorists who may have dashcam footage, to come forward.

He said: "This has been an incredibly awful collision where a man has sadly lost his life.

"Inquiries are now being carried out to formally identify the victim and establish exactly what has happened and we need to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information that may help our investigation.

“It is also not yet clear why the man has got into the Vauxhall Insignia and fled the scene but he has been arrested for theft of a motor vehicle and remains in police custody at this time.

“If anybody saw what happened, or thinks they may have dashcam footage that could assist us, I would ask them to contact police as soon as possible, any detail could be crucial to the investigation.”

The road remains closed between the Laverock Hall Road roundabout and the mini roundabout of the B1326, East Cramlington.
