Man killed in A697 crash

One driver was killed and another is in a critical condition following yesterday’s crash on the A697 in Northumberland.

At 2pm yesterday afternoon, police received a report of a collision on the A697 involving two vehicles. It took place about half-a-mile north of Powburn between a Toyota Yaris and a Citroen Berlingo by the Ingram turn-off, leading to the closure of the road for several hours.

The driver of the Toyota, a 68-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Citroen, a 63-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is currently in a critical condition.

Officers are carrying out inquiries to establish the cause of the collision and are appealing for any witnesses, in particular anyone who may have seen the Toyota driving southbound from the Borders area.
