Man arrested after theft incident in Northumberland

Police have praised local residents after a report of a suspected diesel theft in Northumberland resulted in an arrest.

At just after 4.30pm yesterday, officers received a report of suspected fuel theft at Houndlee.

This was after a man was seen acting suspiciously around a digger that was parked in a layby on the A1068 at Widdrington.

Inquiries were carried out and police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of theft. He has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Morpeth Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Anderson said: “I would like to thank the people for coming forward with this information.

“Any information we receive from the public may be helpful when investigating incidents or reports and these people were right to report their concerns to police.

“I would ask anyone in our community who has any concerns or witnesses anything untoward to report it to police. There may be a simple explanation to the behaviour, but there is no harm in reporting it to make officers aware.”

Anyone with any concerns can contact the Morpeth Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.
