Two sets of roadworks on key routes in Alnwick are due to start after the May bank holiday weekend.

The first relates to a major replacement of an old gas main on South Road that has been subject to leaks over recent years. It will encompass a significant stretch from around the war memorial to The Oaks, subject to inspections which are currently being carried out.

The works will start on Tuesday, May 6, and will run for around eight weeks. They will be carried out under traffic lights which will be manually controlled at peak times.

The second is resurfacing works and structural repairs on the B6341 Clayport Bank, also starting the Tuesday, for three days.

The road will be closed permanently during the works and a signed diversion will be in place. The diversion route will be via the B6346, from Alnwick to Eglingham, to the A697, and on to the C90 which connects the Bridge of Aln to the Alnwick Moor road.

A road closure is required due to the width of the existing road and for the protection of the workforce. It will also allow the works to be carried out more expediently.

It comes as a month-long resurfacing project is taking place on the A1 northbound Alnwick bypass between West Cawledge Park and the end of the dualled section, north of the Denwick junction.
