Alnwick Town Council is to spend in the region of £23,000 on the Mechanics Institute, which will include an overhaul of the heating system – leading to savings on energy bills – and a range of internal improvements.

Members heard that the building made a loss of around £350 in 2014/15, but a profit of around £500 the previous year, meaning that it broadly covers its costs.

However, members had several suggestions for boosting its income with Coun Peter Broom suggesting the installation of broadband while Coun Gordon Castle asked if any of the building could be let as office accommodation.
