City's women became double champions with the extra-time win against Birmingham City - as boss Nick Cushing's wife went into labour. After the win, he admitted he did not know if his third child had arrived.

England's Bronze popped up at the far post in the 105th minute to arrow a header across and into the goal from a deflected corner to seal victory after the first 90 minutes ended goalless.

The right-back told Man City TV: "It's pretty good to win the game overall, especially this week to have sealed the league last week and then to have come here to our home stadium and win the cup, scoring a goal is what it is, but to win the game is just brilliant.

"This trophy is a quite iconic trophy for this club - it was the first that we sealed. Obviously, the league is a big deal bit I think it's nice to get a cup - it shows a different side to you."

Bronze, who was born in Berwick, but grew up and went to school in Alnwick, was named as Player of the Match, which she modestly put down to "just because I scored the goal, to be honest".

She added: "It was a tough game and everyone worked so hard but it lacked a bit of quality."

It was Man City's third major trophy and their second Continental Cup, having won it in 2014. The game was played in front of a crowd of 4,214 at City's Academy Stadium, which was chosen as the 'neutral venue' for the final back in July.

City controlled the first half but Birmingham's German keeper Ann-Katrin Berger kept the teams on level terms, saving shots from Toni Duggan and Nikita Parris.

Freda Ayisi and Melissa Lawley had the best of Birmingham's chances after the break, but both shot wide.

The sides were deadlocked as the game went into extra-time, but Bronze's super reaction header took the spoils.

Manchester City manager Nick Cushing told BBC Sport: "With 20 minutes to go, I thought we'd lose - one of those games where you're on top, but you lose to a goal on the break. We start our Champions League campaign on Thursday and we'll have to play better than that. I haven't had a text [from my wife] yet, so there is no news. I had a job to do here."
