Berwick historian Phil Rowett presented his North Northumberland’s Secret Army talk to a sizeable and appreciative audience in Lowick Village Hall.

Phil’s account of the activities of small groups of men tasked to disrupt any Second World War invasion was far removed from the image of Dad’s Army.

Well organised, well equipped groups used subterfuge and secrecy. Thankfully never tested for real, their well-rehearsed exercises demonstrated a determination to add to the defensive physical barriers that we still see around our coast and countryside.

A few members, having family who had been in these brave groups, were able to provide anecdotal tales.

On Saturday and Sunday, the group is presenting 4,000 Years of Lowick Heritage. Exhibits include photographs, maps and archaeological finds to demonstrate the presence of people living around Lowick from the Bronze Age to the present. See www.lowick.live
