Lots of treats in store for the Santas

A SPECIAL guest will be joining this year’s Santa Saunter to spread the message of Christmas past.

A Santa wearing a green suit, who normally resides at the National Trust’s Lindisfarne Castle, will be joining the huddle of Father Christmases on their five-mile walk around Alnwick on Sunday, November 28, helping to raise money for HospiceCare North Northumberland and Grace House North East Children’s Hospice Appeal.

And he will bring with him some information about his green suit, which was originally worn by St Nicholas before the modernised red and white version which is widely used today.

A National Trust spokeswoman said: “We are really pleased to be supporting the Northumberland Gazette’s Santa Saunter and spreading the word about the green Santa and his origins.”

There are also more treats in store for the Santas taking part in the walk.

Because the group will be working up a bit of an appetite on their way around Alnwick, Barter Books will be providing some sustenance for the sea of red and white.

As part of the route the walk will stop off to see one of England’s biggest second-hand bookshops and get a chance to refuel, before heading onwards.

And the Northumberland Gazette team will also be helping the Santas along their way.

On their way back to the Market Place, while nearing the end of the walk, the group will be treated to ginger wine and mince pies from the Gazette’s own Christmas helpers.

We also have a series of spot prizes for those taking part, including two pairs of tickets to a National Trust property of your choice, valid until the end of 2011. The newly-opened Alnwick Studio has also provided a free haircut for one lucky winner.

Gazette editor Paul Larkin said: “The Santa Saunter is shaping up to be bigger and better than the previous event and we are really looking forward to seeing the sea of red and white, with a hint of green, making its way around the town.

“It is a brilliant way to spread a bit of Christmas spirit and raise money for charity at the same time.”

The walk is due to leave Alnwick Market Place at 11.30am and will then follow a route around the town.

And it is open to all, including dogs, with a prize for the best-dressed pooch.

To enter fill in the form and send it back to Santa Saunter, Northumberland Gazette, 32 Bondgate Without, Alnwick, Northumberland NE66 1PN, or drop it in to the Gazette’s office.

Entry cots £8 per adult and £5 per child which includes the Santa suit and a goody bag. Dogs cost £2. Cheques should be made payable to Northeast Press Ltd Gazette Charities Account.
