Visitors to the show gasped over a glut of vegetables, including best leek in show and a 35lb monster cabbage, chuckled at the disaster-class entries in which a cheeky carrot took the top spot and breathed in a feast of florals in the flower section.
Among the raft of prizes lifted by acclaimed local grower Alan Warnaby were best leek in show class, a stand of three leeks and the one intermediate leek. Alan also walked away with flower credentials including three chrysanthemums.
Taking numerous stand titles including six tomatoes on a plate, collection of three vegetables and three kidney potatoes, Ray Massey also won a score of industrial classes to be awarded the overall baking points title, The Richard Patterson Memorial Trophy.
Other winners included Colin Banks – three pom pom dahlias and stand of sweet peas in a vase; Heather Chamberlain – decorative arrangement of flowers; Liz Moor – four cheese scones and four rock buns; David Moor – four drop scones and a ginger cake; and Claire Thorburn – four fruit scones.
