Lorry overturns on remote Northumberland road

Temporary traffic lights are in place overnight after a lorry overturned on a north Northumberland road.

The HGV, which was carrying 44 tonnes of glass, which was heading north on the A68, when it left the road and ended on its side in the verge, around two miles north of Rochester, which is five miles north-west of Otterburn.

There were no injuries but recovery will take place tomorrow and Northumbria Police traffic officers tweeted this picture to warn motorists of the lights.

UPDATE (January 5; 9.32am): A full road closure will have to be put in place in both directions from around 10am today to clear the road.

This road closure is expected to be in place for a minimum of two hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

UPDATE (January 5; 4.50pm): Northumbria Police has successfully completed the clear-up operation in conjunction with their colleagues Police Scotland and the local authority highways team. The A68 has now re-opened.
