Long tailbacks on A1 in North East after lorry fire
Motorists are advised to avoid the A1 at Gosforth after a HGV caught fire this morning.
Police were informed the vehicle was on fire at just after 7am on the A1 northbound near the Gosforth turn-off. One lane is now open, however, there are long tailbacks and heavy traffic in and around the area.
The second lane will remain closed until the vehicle has been recovered. This is for the safety of motorists on the road. It is expected to remain closed for some time.
Diversions are in place, however, motorists are advised to find an alternative route if possible.
