Long-serving Sir Alan will be a hard act to follow

While it was expected that Sir Alan Beith would stand down in the near future, it is still big news for the area.

For the last 40, and by the time he retires, 42 years, we have been represented by the same well-respected person.

He knows the area inside out and has built up a huge affinity with his constituents, not least by visiting each and every rural community in his patch to make sure he hears everyone’s concerns.

Irrespective of political persuasions, it cannot be denied that Sir Alan has served the electorate well and has worked extremely hard to stand up for this corner of the country.

He has held numerous positions during his time in office and is the longest-serving member of the Liberals.

While he has fought for the communities he represents, Sir Alan has also gone through difficult times in his personal life with the death of his wife Barbara and his son Christopher.

Now in 2015, a new MP will be elected to represent the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency. Let’s hope our next MP follows Sir Alan’s fine example.
