Local Olympic Torchbearers are named

Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Olympic Flame through Northumberland have been named this morning.

The London 2012 Organising Committee (Locog) has released a list of its chosen relay runners, who will each take a 300-metre section of the route through the county, cheered on by the crowds.

And some have also been appointed to carry the torch in Tyne and Wear.

Locog says it has endeavoured to slot all community torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on. Each one will wear a white and gold uniform which been designed by Adidas.

Northumberland County Council’s executive member responsible for tourism, leisure and culture, Coun Neil Bradbury, said: “This announcement really brings the route to life and I am delighted that the Torch will be coming into contact with so many of our communities.

“The Torch Relay will be an exciting and memorable spectacle for all our residents – whatever their age – and I am sure our residents will give the torch , and the torchbearers, an especially warm Northumbrian welcome.”

Sebastian Coe, chairman of Locog added: “The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Northumberland’s moment to shine.”

An average of 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on July 27 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The list denotes the local people who are running in the various Torch Relay stages across the North East and Borders.
