Funding has been secured for the development of a stone-surfaced facility at High Newton-by-the-Sea, catering for 62 vehicles.

The site is located at the north end of an existing agricultural field, which lies east of Newton Hall and an adjacent caravan park.

The development will include a new access, off the C72 road into the village, to the car park. The scheme is not designed to accommodate tourist or other coaches or buses.

An application has been submitted to Northumberland County Council’s planning team. County councillor for Longhoughton Kate Cairns said: “Following months of hard work with the Labour Administration at County Hall, in my position as county councillor, and with strong support from my group at County Hall, I have managed to secure commitment and funding for a new car park.

“We hope this will improve traffic management and parking provision for those who live in and visit Newton and its environs.

“I would encourage all those with an opinion on the application to submit a response. I will be listening to views of the parish council and the community and ensuring they feel adequately heard during this process.”
