LIGHTS: Original way of raising funds

I would like to pay tribute to Kelvin, the Market Place butcher, for arranging an unexpected and original way of raising funds for Alnwick Christmas Lights.

He invited customers to pay 5p per bag, all proceeds to us.

This was not compulsory, but in one year, he raised £350, which he kindly and generously gave to us.

On behalf of the Christmas Lights committee, and the town, I would like to thank Kelvin and his customers for their imaginative support for our work.

This is all done by unpaid volunteers, who work from May onwards to bring some festive cheer to Alnwick.

I recognise that we have many other supporters whose generosity keeps us going, but I thought that this unusual, but effective arrangement, deserved special mention.

Gordon Castle,

Chairman, Alnwick Christmas Lights Committee
