Two lifeboats were launched off the north Northumberland coast yesterday afternoon after reports of three kayakers in difficulty.

At 3.25pm, Humber Coastguard Operations Centre requested the launch of both Seahouses lifeboats, following a report from a local Coastguard officer, who was concerned for three kayakers at the south side of Beadnell Bay that he had been watching for some time.

Both lifeboats were launched and quickly located the kayakers, who did not consider themselves to be in any danger. A Met Office severe weather warning was in place for the area and the wind was increasing, with a choppy sea.

The kayakers were escorted to the shore, and the inshore lifeboat diverted to two paddle-boarders who were also seen safely ashore. All five were met by local Coastguards and advice given.

Both Seahouses lifeboats then returned to station. The crew were having their Christmas party later that night and two female members of the crew had quickly return to the hairdresser for the second time that day, after returning damp and rather windswept from the call-out.
