Lifeboat crew treat injured woman

Seahouses lifeboat came to the rescue after Humber Coastguard received a call for assistance from North East Ambulance Service at 1.10pm on Friday.

An elderly woman has suffered a suspected broken arm or wrist but the causeway was closed by the tide.

Seahouses all-weather lifeboat was requested to launch to convey the ambulance crew to the island. However, due to the delay in the timetaken for the ambulance arriving at Seahouses, it was decided to despatch the lifeboat straight to Holy Island, as there was concern for the welfare of the casualty.

The lifeboat crew are all trained by the RNLI as casualty care medics, and carry a quantity of medical equipment. The lifeboat was alongside the pier at Holy Island in 25 minutes of leaving Seahouses harbour, and the crew were able to give the injured lady some pain relief and medical care.

The tide was falling and an ambulance was able to cross the causeway safely. The lifeboat crew and local Holy Island coastguard, who is also a First Responder, then handed the casualty into the care of the ambulance crew, who treated her and conveyed her to hospital for treatment.

It is believed that the lady injured herself after slipping on rocks. She was in good spirits and was disappointed at missing out on a trip aboard the lifeboat back to Seahouses.
