Lifeboat called out to rescue sheep chased into sea by loose dog

Craster Lifeboat was launched this morning to rescue sheep that had been chased into the sea by an out-of-control dog.

A member of the public had spotted the sheep running into the sea just south of Dunstanburgh Castle and called the emergency services. Howick Coastguard team responded and requested the launch of Craster RNLI lifeboat just after 9am.

But by the time the lifeboat arrived at the scene, two sheep had drowned and had to be recovered from the water and taken back to Craster.

“The sheep had been chased by an uncontrolled dog,” said Kevin Brown, from Craster Lifeboat crew. “This sort of thing doesn’t happen too often, but it’s once too many. It must be devastating for the farmer, particularly at lambing time.”

The Coastguard and Northumbria Police were also involved in the incident.

Craster RNLI Lifeboat had a quiet year in 2013, only launching twice, the last time being on July 7.
