A major discount-supermarket chain has unveiled plans to extend its store in Alnwick.
Lidl wants to increase its existing shop by 437 sq metres, which would expand the retail sales area by 221 sq metres and provide a new in-store bakery – including a preparation area, freezer and two chillers.
The company says that the scheme, to improve the existing store, would see ‘continued employment being retained in the area’.
The proposal will also deliver a reconfigured car park – lit by LED lighting – which would provide 84 parking spaces, including six disabled and four parent/child spaces.
The car park currently provides 85 spaces, including six disabled and nine staff.
Trolley bays will remain adjacent to the store entrance within the customer car park.
The separate staff and service access will be retained at the west of the store via Wagon Way Road.
The company says that there will be one HGV delivery to the store per day. All store waste will be collected at the same time as the deliveries, therefore minimising HGV movements within the site.
Lidl is currently seeking people’s views and once the comments have been considered, and subject to further discussion with Northumberland County Council officers, the proposals will be finalised and a formal planning application is likely to be submitted later this month.
As part of the consultation process, 1,651 leaflets have been posted to local residents and businesses surrounding the site informing them of the regeneration proposal. The leaflet includes a pre-paid response card inviting people to provide comments.
