The building, on Green Batt, is owned by the Northumberland Estates and leased by Northumberland County Council for £17,100 a year. The lease expires on October 22, 2020, but there is a break clause at October 23, 2017.

The traditional stone property in the town centre has been listed with Bradley Hall with the freehold available for offers in the region of £190,000.

A county council spokesman said: “We are in negotiations with other organisations about the future location of the library, but can’t go into details about these discussions at this stage.

“However, co-locating libraries with other services is something we’re doing across Northumberland to give residents a better customer experience.”

As we reported a year ago, discussions are ongoing over the possibility of the Alnwick Playhouse becoming a community hub, housing the library, visitor information, customer services and registrars. This would be in addition to retaining catering and performance spaces.

The proposals, which include investment to transform the Northumberland Hall into a wedding venue, came about after the county council reviewed 89 buildings across the county.
